Taking a Chengdu to Lhasa overland trip along the Sichuan Tibet Highway has always been a long-expected overland route to many adventure lovers and it is the most epic journey in Tibet.

The epic overland journey from Sichuan to Tibet covers about 2100km. We will embark our journey from Chengdu, the gateway city to Tibet on the easternmost edge of Tibetan Plateau.

From Chengdu to Lhasa, this 16-day Sichuan to Tibet Lhasa overland trip will take us to explore the breath-taking landscapes of majestic gorges, rugged peaks, massive pastures, turbulent rivers, as well as lush forests and spectacular glaciers, mysteries and exotic Tibetan cultures. We will also experience for overcoming the dramatic topographical change from the low basin to the roof of the world.

Finally, we will reach to Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet, where we will explore sites of religious and historic significance in the city, including the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple, Drak Yerpa hermitage, Sera monastery and Drepung monastery.  In addition, during the tour, we will ensure that you have plenty of time at your own disposal to visit and observe the traditional life of the indigenous Tibetan farmers.  Participate and hear an inspirational Micro-talk session by a renowned local Tibetan expert on themes range from tradition and culture, architecture and festivals, costume and Tibetan signs and symbols etc. Informal meeting with Buddhist abbot to talk about Tibetan Buddhism and also a visit to Handicraft school is arranged to see and learn the extraordinary array of authentic Tibetan traditional and contemporary works of crafts and arts.

Best Time of Visit

The package journey from Chengdu to Lhasa Overland trip via Chamdo can be done anytime from mid-April through to late October; however, the best months are from mid-April through to mid-June and again from mid-September through to October. In this tour, you will be staying in a comfortable and pleasant boutique or 3-star Tibetan-owned hotels.

Eligibility:

Participants must be in good health and physically fit to be able to spend each day walking around towns, villages, and monasteries with their own equipment. Though you will be doing a lot of walking each day, no trekking is required. Most of this tour will take place in mountainous terrain between 3600 meters and 5200 meters (11,800 feet to 17,000 feet) above sea level. You will spend 3 nights in Lhasa for altitude acclimatization before going above 3600 meters. Ascent will be slow and gradual to reduce the risks of altitude-related illness. This tour is not recommended for those who have severe asthma or who have had problems with high elevation in the past.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Chengdu Elevation: 500m

  • Arrive in Chengdu – collection from Shuangliu International Airport and escort to hotel
  • Discuss about the overland trip agendas with local Tibetan tour guide and driver
  • Overnight in Chengdu

Day 2Exploration around Chengdu

  • Visit the Panda Breeding Center to learn about Panda rearing, breeding and conservations
  • Visit Wenshu Monastery (Manjushri Monastery) initially built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) considered to be the best-preserved Buddhist temple in Chengdu
  • Visit the Chengdu People’s Park a comprehensive park which integrates heritage preservation with entertainment
  • Evening, experience and enjoy the Sichuan Opera show, a popular form of drama and musical theatre in China with roots going back to the early periods in China.

Day 3Chengdu to Dartsedo (Kangding) town Distance: 340km Elevation: 2600m

  • Rise up early, depart Chengdu for Dartsedo town the capital seat of Kandze autonomous region, all day overland drive
  • En-route, stop by and visit Luding Chain Bridge, Dadu river in Luding County and An Gyu monastery an important seat of Gelupa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism in Dartsedo
  • Overnight stay in Dartsedo town

Day 4Dartsedo to Lhagang (Tagong) Distance: 113km Elevation: 3730m

  • Drive to and reach Lhagang
  • Visit Lhagang monastery, thought to be the 1stTibetan Buddhism monastery in Kham of the east Tibet built in 652 by the 33rdTibet king of Songtsam Gampo for his Chinese wife – the Princess Wencheng
  • Overnight stop in Dardo County

Day 5Dardo to Kandze via Tawu (Daofu) and Drango (Luhuo) Distance: 270km Elevation: 3900m

  • Head out from Dardo and drive to Kandze County
  • Stop by and exploration around Tawu and Drango
  • Reach and overnight stay in Kandze county

Day 6Exploration around Kandze County

  • Visit Den Gongpa temple constructed at the suggestion of Drogon Ghogyel Phakpa in the 13thcentury while en route for Mongolia
  • Visit Kandze Gongpa originally constructed by the Qosot Mongols circa 1642
  • Overnight stay in Kandze county

Day 7Kandze to Derge via Manigango and Yilhun Lhatso Lake Distance: 200km Elevation: 3950m

  • Leave Kandze for Derge County, Dege used to be once the center of the Kingdom in Kham
  • Descend and drive by crossing Manigango and witness the gorgeous view of Yilhun Lhatso Lake, a holy alpine lake at an altitude of around 4200 meters
  • Visit the Derge Printing House, famous for its printing press that still uses traditional wood-block printing methods
  • Overnight stop in Derge county

Day 8Dege to Chamdo Prefecture Distance: 350km Altitude

  • Drive to Chamdo, the Tibet’s third largest city after Lhasa and Shigatse
  • Transiting through: beautiful grassland with endless prairies, blue sky and white clouds, stunning scenery and natural landscapes
  • Reach Chamdo Prefecture and rest

Day 9Qamdo to Barsho Distance: 265Kms Elevation: 2725m

  • In the morning, visit Galden Jampaling Monastery built on top of a four-terraced mesa in the 15th Century by a disciple of Tsongkhapa, Jansem Sherab Zangpo
  • Then, leave Qamdo for Barsho town
  • Transiting through the Bangda Grassland, one of the most famous pastures in Tibet
  • Climb over the precipitous Yela Mountain (4839m), the most dangerous natural barrier on Hengduan Mountain Range
  • Then following the famous Seventy-two bends and descend to the shore of Nu River
  • Arrive in Barsho and rest

Day 10Barsho to Pomi Distance: 230km Elevation: 2930mm

  • Drive towards Pomi County, a beautiful Tibetan small town surrounded by forests and Snow Mountains
  • On the way, stop by and eye witness the gorgeous the alpine Rawo lake fed by glacial waters
  • Head out from Rawo Lake and continue drive to Midui Glacier
  • Afterward, drive towards Pomi County and overnight

Day 11Pomi to Basum Tso Lake via Bayi Prefecture Distance: 380km Elevation: 3470m

  • Continue drive toward Basum Tso Lake, a stunning highland lake an offering of awesome views, such as snow-capped peaks, lush forest and many glaciers
  • Transiting through a couple of interesting farmers’ villages and Lulang timberland
  • Climb over and catch the stunning view of Mt. Namjagbarwa from Sejila mountain pass and Bonri Mountain En Route
  • Reach Basum Tso Lake and rest at the Lake shore resort

Day 12Basum Tso Lake to Lhasa Distance: 354km Elevation: 3650m

  • Rise early to catch a stunning view of the lake sunrise view
  • Take a walk around the lake and visit the Buddhist temple of Nyingma tradition, date back to 1500 years and seated at the center of the lake on an islet
  • Then head to Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet
  • Arrive in Lhasa and rest

Day 13Explorations around Lhasa

  • Take a walk up and visit the Potala Palace, the fascinating landmark building in Lhasa, the winter residence of every Dalai Lama from the fifth to the current 14th
  • Explore the Jokhang temple, the“spiritual heart” of Lhasa city
  • Stroll around Barkhor Street and the surrounding old quarters of the town

  • Visit Drepung Monastery the biggest Gelugpa learning center
  • Sera Monastery, one of the “Great three” Buddhist monasteries noted for their Buddhist dialectic debate session usually held in the afternoons

Day 15Lhasa to Drak Yerpa hermitage

  • Visit Drak Yerpa hermitage, 16 kilometers northeast of Lhasa – a short drive from Lhasa
  • Afterward, visit a family in rural traditional Tibetan village to observe and experience an up close of the traditional lifestyle of the indigenous Tibetan farmers and taste locally made snacks
  • Double back and return to Lhasa
