This Shangri la to Lhasa Overland Trip proposed overland expedition tour is going to be one of the greatest Himalayas adventures. Because throughout the tour, we will ensure you that you have plenty of time at your own disposal to experience the natural stunning beauties, Tibetan Buddhism culture, customs and traditions in an in-depth manner. We will begin this 14-day overland expedition tour starting from Shangri-la, a county-level city situated in north western Yunnan province in China and the main seat of the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

Shangri-la, the mythical land is the novelist James Hilton’s fictional account of the legendary Tibetan paradise Shambala. In Hilton’s 1933 novel, Lost Horizon, he changes the name of the paradise to Shangri-La. This lost Tibetan paradise is a valley cut off from the world.

In our Shangri-la exploration, we will be visiting some of the important sites there, including the 300-year-old Tibetan monastery, the Ganden Sumtseling Monastery. Visit the prayer halls and temples at the monastery, and then self-paced off around the Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-la, the town has a history of 1,300 years and certainly excellent chance to experience the Tibetan way of life. The old style jewellery, painted scrolls, cottage industry-produced earthenware, incense and religious ornaments which can be found in the old town.

Next, the overland journey will take us to Markam County, Markam is under the jurisdiction of the Chamdo prefecture in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Markam has for centuries been a strategic crossroads town on the salt and tea trade routes between Tibet and China. Then, we will be following the Sichuan Tibet highway through Mekong gorge, numerous beautiful snow-capped mountain, beautiful grassland, fertile land, Markam salt field.

We will continue our journey to Nyingchi prefecture lying in the south-eastern area of Tibet. Nyingchi is the lowest region in Tibet at an average altitude of 3,100m, it is known as the “Switzerland in Tibet”. Quite different from other regions in Tibet. Along with Nyingchi tour, we will be visiting Rawo Lake, the gorgeous and crystal Midui Glacier, Lulang timberland, viewpoint of Mt. Namjagbawa 28th highest peak in the world, Basum Tso Lake, Lamaling Temple notably a holy sites of Nyingma tradition in Tibetan Buddhism.

Lastly but not least, we will embark our extended journey toward Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet, where we will explore sites of religious and historic significance in the city, including the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple, Drak Yerpa hermitage, Sera monastery and Drepung monastery.  In addition, during the tour we will have an ample chance to visit and observe the traditional life of the indigenous Tibetan farmers.  Participate and hear an inspirational Micro-talk session by a renowned local Tibetan expert on themes range from tradition and culture, architecture and festivals, costume and Tibetan signs and symbols etc. Informal meeting with Buddhist abbot to talk about Tibetan Buddhism and also a visit to Handicraft school is arranged to see and learn the extraordinary array of authentic Tibetan traditional and contemporary works of crafts and arts

Best Time of Visit

Travel Gear:

Upon joining, each participant will be sent a list of required and recommended gear for this journey that they will be responsible for.

Accommodation:

Major economic cities such as Shangri-La, Deqen, Markam, Pomi, Nyingchi and Lhasa, hotel we will be staying in a comfortable and pleasant 3-4 star rated Tibetan-owned hotels. But one night at Rawo village, accommodation need to be arranged at best locally available guesthouses

Toilets are usually outside and are not always as hygienic. Showers are often unavailable or only available at the local shower house. In Nepal, you will stay at highly rated boutique hotels in a central location. Hotel upgrades are available in Lhasa and Kathmandu upon request.

Meals: Breakfast is included in the quote for each morning you are in Tibet. Lunch and dinner are not included in the price.

Itinerary

Day 1Day 1: Arrive in Shangri-la Elevation: 3260m

  • Meet with local Tibetan tour guide and driver and discuss about the overland trip agendas
  • Afterward, visit the Sungtsenling Monastery. established in 1681 under the prompt to the Fifth Dalai lama Lobsang Gyatso
  • Self-paced off around the Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-la, the town has a history of 1,300 years
  • Overnight in Shangri-la

Day 2Shangrila to Deqen Altitude: 3280m Distance: 190Km Drive: 7hrs

  • Leave Shangri-la and drive to Deqen county
  • Transit through the upper Yangtze gorge
  • On the way, enjoy the spectacular viewpoint of Mt. Kawa Karpo, the sacred snow covered mountain and the Mekong river
  • Arrive in Deqen county and rest.

Day 3Deqen to Markam Altitude: 3900m Distance: 332Kms Drive: 6hrs

  • Leave Deqen for Markam – This part of road used to be of economic significance in ancient China, and was known as the “Tea-Horse Road.” Markam is both the intersection of Yunnan-Tibet Highway and Sichuan-Tibet Highway
  • Follow the Sichuan Tibet highway through Mekong gorge, enjoy the sweeping views of numerous beautiful snow-capped mountain, beautiful grassland, fertile land and the Markam salt field
  • Climb over several high passes such as the Dungala pass (5008m), Mt. Dungri Karpo (6090m) Joba la pass (3908m), Laoshan pass (4060m)
  • Stay for the night in Markam county

Day 4Markam to Zuogong Altitude: 3280m Distance: 160Kms Drive: 5hrs

  • In the morning prior to leave for Zuogong, visit the Markham monastery
  • And then heads up to Zogong, follow along the spectacular road known as the ’99 bends’ route through the upper basin of the Mekong River
  • Drive through Tibetan farming villages
  • Arrive in Zuogong and rest

Day 5Zuogong –Rawo Lake Altitude: 2725m Distance: 222Km Drive: 7hrs

  • Depart Zuogong early in the morning, all day overland drive, transiting through the Tibet to Sichuan highway:
  • Ascent the Zar Gama La Pass (4,618m), and down through 180 switchbacks to the Upper Salween River and cross Nakchu Tsampa Bridge at Po.
  • Continue through the Ngajukla pass (4468m) which forms the watershed between the Brahmaputra and Salween rivers
  • Eye witness the gorgeous the alpine Rawo lake fed by glacial waters
  • Overnight at a the local guesthouse

Day 6Rawo to Pomi County Altitude: 2750m Distance: 140km Drive: 3hrs

  • Head out from Rawo for Pomi County
  • En-route, stop by and start to trek uphill to eye witness the gorgeous and crystal Midui Glacier
  • Exploration around the site for photo shooting
  • Afterward, drive towards Pomi County, a beautiful Tibetan small town surrounded by forests and Snow Mountains
  • Overnight in Pomi County

Day 7Pomi County to Nyingchi (Bayi Prefecture) Altitude: 2990m Distance: 230km Drive: 6hrs

  • Continue drive toward Nyingchi Bayi prefecture lying in the south-eastern area of Tibet, the lowest region in Tibet at an average altitude of 3,100m
  • Transiting through a couple of interesting farmers’ villages and Lulang timberland
  • Stop by and catch the stunning view of Mt. Namjagbarwa from Sejila mountain pass and Bonri Mountain En Route
  • Reach in Bayi prefecture and rest.

Day 8Bayi to Basum Tso Lake Altitude: 3470m Distance: 150Kms Drive: 2hrs

  • Leave Bayi for Basum Tso Lake, a stunning highland lake an offering of awesome views, such as snow-capped peaks, lush forest and many glaciers
  • Take a walk around the lake and visit the Buddhist temple of Nyingma tradition, date back to 1500 years and seated at the centre of the lake on an islet
  • Overnight at the Lake shore resort.

Day 9Basum Tso Lake to Lhasa Altitude: 3650m Distance: 360km Drive: 4hrs

  • Rise early to catch a stunning view of the lake sunrise
  • Then head to Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet
  • Arrive in Lhasa and rest

  • Take a walk up and visit the Potala Palace, the fascinating landmark building in Lhasa, the winter residence of every Dalai Lama from the fifth to the current 14th

  • Stroll around Barkhor street and the surrounding old quarters of the town

Day 12Explorations around Lhasa

  • Visit Drepung Monastery the biggest Gelugpa learning center
  • Sera Monastery, one of the “Great three” Buddhist monasteries noted for their Buddhist dialectic debate session usually held in the afternoons.

Day 13Lhasa to Drak Yerpa hermitage

  • Visit Drak Yerpa hermitage, 16 kilometres northeast of Lhasa – a short drive from Lhasa
  • Afterward, visit a family in rural traditional Tibetan village to observe and experience an up close of the traditional lifestyle of the indigenous Tibetan farmers and taste locally made snacks
  • Double back and return to Lhasa.
