Tour Details

You will begin this 12-day tour starting from Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet otherwise known as the Roof of the World. In Lhasa, we will be exploring major best-loved sights of religious and historic significance in the city, including the Potala Palace, the Norbulingka Palace, the Jokhang Temple, Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery.

During your Lhasa exploration tour, you will have a great chance to experience the most popular Tibetan traditional festival known as the Shoton Festival which literally means “Yoghurt Banquet Festival”.  The event includes Tibetan opera performance at Norbulingka the summer palace of the successive Dalai Lamas and the unveiling of Thangka at Drepung and Sera Monastery which is a major highlight visited by many local Tibetans and tourists.

Following the explorations around Lhasa, the trip will take you to Lhoka region the cradle of the Tibetan civilization–where you will have an opportunity to witness the first palace -Yumbu Lhakang -and the first Buddhist monastery – Samye Monastery, as well as what is considered to be the stretch of the earliest agricultural farmland in the Tibetan civilization.

During the tour, you will be travelling to the central west part of Tibet. Along with this route, you will be amazed at a number of gorgeous sights. We will stop by the Yamdrok Lake and the Karo La Glacier, to sink in with their tranquillity and majesty, before we hit and explore around Gyantse. Making most of our time in Shigatse, we will pay a visit to Tashi Lhunpo monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in the Tsang province or the west-central Tibet. After Shigatse, the tour will take you to Namtso Lake, one of the largest salt lakes in Tibet, after crossing a couple of high passes: namely, the Shugu-la pass (5440m) followed by kyang-la pass (5240m).

In addition, during the tour, we will have an ample chance to visit and observe the first-hand traditional life of the indigenous Tibetan farmers and nomad’s life by joining them herding yaks and sheep and making cheese, yoghurt, and butter. Try riding a yak! At the end of the day, relax while drinking butter tea. Furthermore, swap stories with the locals. Participate and hear an inspirational Micro-talk session by a renowned local Tibetan expert on themes range from tradition and culture, architecture and festivals, costume and Tibetan signs and symbols etc. A visit to Shol Dhenpa Handicraft School is followed by to see and learn the extraordinary array of authentic Tibetan traditional and contemporary works of crafts and arts.

Best Time of Visit

This tour starts on 17th, August 2020 and ends on 28th, August 2020. The tour is designed to reach at the Mt Kailash on the 15th day of the Fourth month in Tibetan Lunar Calander. Which is a festival called the Shoton Festival tour.  We can arrange this journey for groups of two to ten people. Discounts available for groups of 3 or more persons. Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Lhasa Elevation 3590 meters

  • Arrive in Lhasa – collection from Lhasa airport
  • Check in hotel, rest and acclimatization

Day 2Explorations around Lhasa

  • Take a walk up and visit the Potala Palace, the fascinating landmark building in Lhasa, the winter residence of every Dalai Lama from the fifth to the current 14th
  • Explore the Jokhang temple, the“spiritual heart” of Lhasa city
  • Stroll around Barkhor street and the surrounding old quarters of the town

Day 3Explorations around Lhasa

  • Visit Drepung Monastery, one of the “Great Three” Buddhist monasteries in Tibet to see the Buddha painting Thangka display
  • Afterward, visit Nechung temple just below Drepung – the seat of the State Oracle of Tibet
  • Visit Sera Monastery in the afternoon, one of the “Great Three ”Buddhist university monasteries to see the Buddha painting Thangka display

Day 4Lhasa – Drak Yerpa Monastery – Norbulingka

  • Visit Drak Yerpa monastery 16 kilometres northeast of Lhasa – a short drive from Lhasa
  • Double back and return to Lhasa
  • In the late afternoon head to and explore around the Norbulingka Palace and enjoy the Tibetan opera performance. Norbulingka Palace is the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas, as well as a great horticulture park

Day 5Lhasa – Tsetang – Samye Distance 205kms Elevation 3576 meters

  • Drive to Tsedang, the capital seat of Yarlung Valley (otherwise known as Lhoka region)
  • Visit Yumbu Lhakang famed as the first Tibetan palace
  • After Yumbu Lhakang, double back to Tsedang
  • Visit Tandruk temple en-route– one of the earliest Buddhist temples in Tibet
  • Then, drive on to Samye monastery -the first monastery in Tibet
  • Explore around the monastery renowned for its architecture and the rich murals
  • Overnight stay in Samye Monastery Hotel

Day 6Samye – Gyantse 360kms Elevation 3980 meters

  • Depart Samye early in the morning, all day overland drive
  • Cross over Kamba-la pass (4700m)
  • Descend and drive by the Yamdrok Lake – a freshwater lake stunningly gorgeous
  • Drive-up another pass –the Karo La – for an amazing view of the Mt. Nyenchen Kangsar glacier
  • Continue drive and reach the town of Gyantse, historically considered the third largest and most prominent town in Tibet
  • Overnight stay in Gyantse

Day 7Gyantse -Shigatse Distance 115kms  Elevation 3840 meters

  • In Gyantse, visit the Pelkor Chode Monastery, and the Gyantse Kumbum – a 32 meters (105ft) high structure, a nine-tier building with 108 gates
  • Leave Gyantse, drive a short distance to Shigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet.
  • En route stop by and visit a Tibetan village namely Pashual and observe the traditional life of the indigenous Tibetan farmers and taste locally made snacks.   
  • Visit Shalu Monastery (a slight detour south) renowned for mural painting and Buddhist scholastic learning and training
  • Travel on to Shigatse city
  • Overnight stop in Shigatse

Day 8Shigatse—Shugu La Pass—Dhamshung Distance: 325kms Elevation: 4290m

  • Tour around Tashi Lhunpo, the largest Buddhist monastery in the Tsang province of Tibet, and witness the largest gilded statue of Future Buddha in Tibet
  • Take a gentle exploration stroll around the local market
  • Then, leave Shigatse, and drive along the Friendship Highway in Lhasa direction
  • Turn left at Takdruka village (what used to be the ferry crossing point)
  • Continue driving through a stunning valley, cross over the  Shugu La pass (5259m)
  • Reach Dhamshung – a small town on the northern nomadic upland
  • Overnight stop in the county seat

Day 9Dhamshung to Namtso Lake Distance: 65kms Elevation: 4718m

  • Set off – making a short drive to Namtso Lake
  • Reach Namtso lake – one of the largest salt lakes in Tibet, and throw yourself into the incredible landscape surrounding the lake
  • Take a short walk along the lakeshore – sink in with the beautiful surrounding landscapes
  • Leave Namtso lake and head back to Damshung County and rest

Day 10Nomad Tent Stay Distance: 90km + 150Elevation: 4450m

  • Leave Damshung and head back to Lhasa, en-route, travel on to Yangbachen, a small Tibetan nomadic settlement north west of Lhasa town
  • Observe and experience the Tibetan nomad’s life by joining them herding yaks and sheep and making cheese, yogurt, and butter
  • Visit the world’s highest Yangbachen geothermal hot spring, go for a soak in the hot spring swimming pool.
  • In the late afternoon, head back to Lhasa and rest

Day 11Micro-talk session and Handicraft Center Tour in Lhasa town

  • AM:Handicraft Center Tour

Visit Shol Dhenpa Handicraft center to see and learn the extraordinary array of authentic Tibetan traditional and contemporary works of crafts and arts, like Tibetan pottery wares, Thangka painting, sewing work, paper and Buddhist statue fabrications.

  • PM: Micro-talk session

Participate and hear an inspirational and enlightening talk or a presentation by a renowned local Tibetan expert on themes range from tradition and culture, architecture and festivals, costume and Tibetan signs and symbols etc.

Day 12Depart Lhasa

  • Transfer to the Lhasa airport or train station
