Amdo is a Tibetan term located in the eastern part of Tibet, the area is known as Kokonor in Mongolian and Qinghai in Chinese. The traditional Tibetan region of Amdo encompasses a large area from the Machu River (Yellow River) to the Drichu river (Yangtse River). While historically, culturally, and ethnically a Tibetan area with an average elevation over 3,000m.

Amdo towns can be a great travel destination for those who happen to be visiting Chengdu, Xining, Lanzhou, or even Xian. There is convenient travel to Amdo Tibet from all these cities by either a short flight or a few hours overland by bus or private vehicle. Train travel is even an option for some Amdo destinations.

This will be a great off the beaten track tour that will take us through marvellous landscapes, many ancient monasteries, temples and palaces, welcoming and Friendly Tibetan People, long-standing customs and tradition. This tour begins and ends in Xining, the capital city of Qinghai province in western China.

Furthermore, during the tour we will also have an excellent chance to experience an up-close of the nature and traditional lifestyle of the authentic Tibetan nomads through trying your hand at milking yaks, making yak butter, herding yaks, and riding horses with local nomads. At the end of the day, relax while drinking butter tea, eating yak jerky, and swapping stories with the local nomads.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Xining Elevation: 2275m

  • Greet by our local guide and driver at the airport
  • Transfer to the hotel
  • Rest and Acclimatization

 

Day 2Xining – Qinghai Lake Elevation: 3196m Distance: 128km 3 hours

  • In the morning, visit Kumbum Jampaling Monastery, the monastery was founded by the Third Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso in 1583, it is one of the 6 great monasteries in Tibet and home to over 600 monks
  • From Kumbum monastery, head out to Qinghai Lake, Kokonor or Tso Ngonpo in Tibetan, the largest lake in China as well as the largest Salt Lake in Asia
  • Reach Qinghai lake and take a short walk along the lakeshore – sink in with the beautiful surrounding landscapes
  • Overnight at a lake shore local guesthouse

 

Day 3Qinghai Lake – Gui’de (Chika) – Xining Elevation: 2270m Distance: 60km 130 hours

  • Drive toward Chika Tibetan town
  • Visit the Jokhang temple which hosts the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni’s statue,
  • En-route, stop by and walk over the Yellow River bridge
  • Head back to Xining and rest

 

Day 4Xining – Gunlong Monastery – Rebkong (Tongren) Elevation: 2480m Distance: 240km 5 hours

  • Leave Xining and drive to Gunlong Monastery, one of the most famous and oldest monasteries near the northern Dzongchu River in Amdo
  • Afterwards, continue to drive southeast along the Yellow River to Rebkong
  • Reach Rebkong and rest

 

Day 5Exploration around Rebkong Elevation: 2480m

  • Visit the Rongwu Gonchen monastery, upper and lower Sangeshong monastery
  • Visit Artist villages and families. to observe up close Tibetan artisan and their apprentice
  • Overnight in Rebkong

Day 6Rebkong – Labrang via Gangya Grassland Elevation: 2900m Distance: 100km 4 hours

  • Set off again and drive along a narrow valley, cross small villages and temples, transiting through the beautiful Gangya Grassland
  • Reach Labrang monastery and visit around, the monastery is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, established in 1709 by the first Jamyang Zhaypa, Ngawang Tsondru
  • Overnight in Labrang

 

Day 7Labrang – Taktsang Lhamo Monastery (Langmusi) Elevation: 3100m Distance: 230km 4 hours

  • Set out on the road to Taktsang Lhamo Chinese (Langmusi)
  • Visit Taktsang Lhamo monastery, a monastery located on the border of Gansu and Sichuan. This area, which is inhabited by nomads, offers great hiking and horseback trekking
  • Overnight in Langmusi

 

Day 8Exploration around Taktsang Lhamo

  • Enjoy for the picnic on a hill and go hiking, trekking, or horseback riding
  • Overnight in Langmusi

 

Day 9Taktsang Lhamo – Sogdzong (Mongolian town) – Tsekog Elevation: 3660m Distance: 100km 3 hours

  • Set off again for Mongolian yurts
  • Visit Mongolian yurts heavily influenced by Tibetan culture
  • Then continue a short drive to the Tsekog
  • Stay overnight in a nomad’s family and interact with them about their life

 

Day 10Nomad Life Experience in Tsekog Grassland

  • Experience first-hand the lifestyle of Tibetan nomads by joining with them for herding yak and sheep, making yak butter, cheese and yoghurt, help nomads to collect yak dung, learn Tibetan food with local nomads and cook your own meals with them

 

Day 11Tsekog – Xining Elevation: 2270m Distance: 265km 4 hours

  • Head back to Xining along the yellow river
  • Cross over a virgin forest to the farming lands of Amdo
  • Reach Xining and rest

  • Transfer to Xining train station or airport by local tour guide and the driver
