Tour Details

You will begin this 19-day overland expedition tour starting from Xinjiang Kashgar, one of the westernmost cities of China, near the border with Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. This proposed overland tour is going to be one of the greatest Himalayas adventures. Because throughout the tour you will have travelled almost the entire length of the Himalayas and Karakorum mountain ranges.

On this route, we will ensure you that you have plenty of time at your own disposal to experience the Muslim and Buddhism culture and customs, and to visit the historical cities along the Silk Road in Southern Xinjiang, such as the Apak Hoja Tomb, the popular Uyghur Bazaar/ Market, Id Kah Mosque in Kashgar, the Hotan Museum, Jade Factory, Atlas Silk Factory and Hotan Bazaar.

After touring around Xinjiang region, we will then set out on the road of Tibet to Ngari prefecture (also Ali) is known as the “roof of the roof of the world” and “the most Tibetan part of Tibet”, situated at an elevation of 4,500 meters above sea level. You will be visiting some of the important sites there, including the Mt. Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, Guge Kingdom, Pangong Lake, and Rutog rock paintings.

Next, we will go to Shigatse region, there we will be able to visit some of the marvellous landscapes and stunning sites in the southwest and central Tibet. For example, the north-facing Mt. Everest (alt. 8848m), the Mt. Shisha Pangma (alt.8012m), the Yamdrok Lake, the Karo La Glacier, The Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in Shigatse and Pelkhor Chode Monastery in Gyantse.

Then, finally, we will embark our extended journey toward Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet, where we will explore sites of religious and historic significance in the city, including the Potala Palace and Norbulingka Palace, the Jokhang Temple, Drak Yerpa hermitage, Sera monastery, and Drepung monastery.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Kashgar Elevation: 1290m

  • Arrive in Kashgar
  • Meet with local Tibetan tour guide and driver, go through the detailed tour itinerary

Day 2Exploration around Kashgar

  • Visit the Apak Hoja Tomb (Xiangfei Mu in Chinese), to see and learn about the Uyghur Islamic architecture complex
  • Visit the popular Uyghur Bazaar/ Market, renowned as the biggest market in Central Asia
  • After lunch, visit and explore Kashgar historic old town and Id Kah Mosque, the largest mosque in China to observe the Islamic life of the Uyghur people

Day 3Kashgar to Hotan Via Yechang Distance: 522Kms Elevation: 1300m

  • Depart Kashi early in the morning, all day overland drive to Hotan (Hetian)
  • Enjoy driving through the stunning landscaped of Gobi Desert sand dunes
  • Arrive in Hotan, check-in hotel and rest

Day 4Exploration around Hotan

  • Visit Hotan Museum, a vivid presentation of brilliant manual textile technology, pottery sculpture, painting art and Buddhist culture of Hotan area, reaching back two thousand years
  • Afterward, visit the Jade Factory, Atlas Silk Factory, Hotan Bazaar where you will immerse yourself in the local trading atmosphere

Day 5Hotan to Yecheng (Karghilik) Distance: 262Kms Elevation: 1375m

  • Leave Hotan town, and travel west to Yecheng
  • Driving along the way, observe and enjoy the unique culture of Xinjiang minority, and the views of the stunning landscaped of Taklamakan with grey-black rocks and sand dunes
  • Arrive in Yecheng and visit the thousand Buddha cave
  • Check in hotel and rest

Day 6Yecheng to Dahonliutan Distance: 499Kms Elevation: 4200m

  • Leave Yecheng for Dahonliutan
  • Cross several high passes fall and enjoy the sweeping views of Kunlun Mountain range, like the Heika Pass, Kudi Pass and the Maza Pass
  • Overnight stop in Dahonliutan

Day 7Dahonliutan – Domar – Rutog Distance: 518Kms Elevation: 4260m

  • Head out from Dahonliutan and enter Tibet Autonomous Region, drive along the Jieshan Pass and head to Rutog, notably called the roof of the world
  • Arrive in Rutog and rest

Day 8Rutog to Siquanhe Via Pangong-tso Lake Distance: 117Kms Elevation: 4255m

  • Set off again for Siguanhe
  • En-route stop by and visit Pangong-Tso Lake, the highest birds island in the world located at an elevation of 4240m above the sea level
  • After visiting the Pangong-Tso Lake continue driving toward Siguanhe
  • Arrive in Siquanhe and rest

Day 9Siquanhe to Zanda Distance: 255Kms Elevation: 3700m

  • Leave Siquanhe and travel to Zanda
  • Visit Tholing monastery in Zanda, built by the 2ndking of Guge Kingdom in 996
  • Overnight stay in Zanda and rest

Day 10Zanda to Darchen Distance: 228Kms Elevation: 4700m

  • Visit Guge and explore around the ruins of the Guge Kingdom considered to be the highest of the ancient kingdom located on the ridge of the Roof of the World
  • Then head out to Darchen, where the Mount Kailash trekking basecamp

Day 11Darchen to Manasarovar Lake Distance: 100Kms Elevation: 4280m

  • Leave Darchen to Darpochen Stupas by environmentally friendly vehicle, best panoramic view of Mt. Kailash for photo shooting,
  • Return to Darchen and drive to Manasarovar Lake– one of the most venerated lakes in Tibet

Day 12Lake Manasarovar to Saga Distance: 495kms Elevation 4670m

  • Leave Lake Manasarovar for Saga, drive along the Yarlung Tsangpo river
  • Drive through barren canyons and green meadowland with scattered villages
  • Arrive in Saga and rest

Day 13Saga to Mt. Everest Base Camp Distance: 220kms Elevation 5200m

  • Set off again, drive toward Mt. Everest Basecamp early in the morning
  • Stop by the view point of Peiku Tso lake and Shishapangma
  • Arrive in Rongbuk Monastery, claimed to be the highest monastery in the world (5000 meters)
  • Stay overnight at Rongbuk monastery guesthouse

Day 14Mt. Everest to Shigatse Distance: 350kms Elevation 3840m

  • Travel on to the tourist Everest Base Camp for the majestic sight/view of the Mt. Everest
  • Leave Mt. Everest for Shigatse city
  • Cross over the Gyatso La Pass (a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5220 meters)
  • Arrive in Shigatse and tour around Tashi Lhunpo, to witness the largest gilded statue of Future Buddha in Tibet
  • Overnight stay in Shigatse

Day 15Shigatse – Gyantse – Karo La Glacier – Yamdrok Lake-Karo La Glacier Distance: 380kms Elevation: 3650m

  • Depart Shigatse early in the morning, all day overland drive, transiting through:
  • Arrive in Gyantse, a small, but prominent town in Tibet
  • Visit the Pelkor Chode Monastery, and the Gyantse Kumbum – a 32 metres (105 ft) high structure, a nine-tier building with 108 gates
  • Karo La Pass – an amazing alpine view of the holy Mt. Nyenchen Kangsar glacier in the backdrop
  • Yamdrok Lake – a freshwater lake that you can see from the summit of Kamba-la (4700m)
  • Arrive in Lhasa and rest

Day 16Explorations around Lhasa

  • Visit Drepung Monastery, one of the “Great Three” Buddhist monasteries in Tibet to see the Buddha paining Thangka display
  • Afterward, visit Nechung temple just below Drepung – the seat of the State Oracle of Tibet
  • Visit Sera Monastery, one of the “Great three” Buddhist monasteries noted for their Buddhist dialectic debate session usually held in the afternoons

Day 17Explorations around Lhasa

  • Take a walk up and visit the Potala Palace, the fascinating landmark building in Lhasa, the winter residence of every Dalai Lama from the fifth to the current 14th
  • Explore the Jokhang temple, the“spiritual heart” of Lhasa city
  • Stroll around Barkhor street and the surrounding old quarters of the town

Day 18Lhasa – Drak Yerpa Hermitage

  • Visit Drak Yerpa hermitage, 16 kilometers northeast of Lhasa – a short drive from Lhasa
  • Double back and return to Lhasa
  • In the late afternoon head to and explore around the Norbulingka Palace and enjoy the Tibetan opera performance. Norbulingka Palace is the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas, as well as a great horticulture park
