Amdo is a Tibetan term located in the eastern part of Tibet, the area is known as Kokonor in Mongolian and Qinghai in Chinese. The traditional Tibetan region of Amdo encompasses a large area from the Machu River (Yellow River) to the Drichu river (Yangtse River). While historically, culturally, and ethnically a Tibetan area with an average elevation over 3,000m.

Amdo towns can be a great travel destination for those who happen to be visiting Chengdu, Xining, Lanzhou, or even Xian. There is convenient travel to Amdo Tibet from all these cities by either a short flight or a few hours overland by bus or private vehicle. Train travel is even an option for some Amdo destinations.

Amdo was also traditionally a place of great learning and scholarship and contains many great monasteries including Kumbum Jampa Ling (Chin. Ta’er Si) near Xining, Labrang Tashi Khyil south of Lanzhou and the Kirti Monasteries of Ngaba and Taktsang Lhamo in Dzoge County (Ch: Ruanggui /Zoige Xia) For the adventurous traveller, Amdo is wonderful wind-swept and tree-less environment, supporting vast herds of the domestic yak as well as many types of wildlife.  No permits are required for independent travel in the Amdo region.

This will be a great tour as we will be visiting some of the marvellous landscapes, stunning sites including some of the great Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, including Trekar Monastery, Tsori Katse Monastery, Ragya Monastery and Kumbum Jampa Ling etc. This tour begins and ends in Xining, the capital city of Qinghai province in western China.

Furthermore, during the tour we will also have an excellent chance to experience an up-close of the nature and traditional lifestyle of the authentic Tibetan nomads through trying your hand at milking yaks, making yak butter, herding yaks, and riding horses with local nomads. At the end of the day, relax while drinking butter tea, eating yak jerky, and swapping stories with the local nomads.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Xining Elevation: 2275m

  • Greet by our local guide and driver at the airport
  • Transfer to the hotel
  • Rest and Acclimatization

Day 2Xining – Qinghai Lake – Tsigorthang / Xinghai Elevation: 3303m Distance: 340km, 6 hours

  • In the morning, drive toward the south shore of Qinghai Lake, Kokonor or Tso Ngonpo in Tibetan, the largest lake in China as well as the largest Salt Lake in Asia
  • Take a short walk along the lakeshore – sink in with the beautiful surrounding landscapes
  • Afterwards, head to Tsigorthang through some of the beautiful grasslands.
  • Overnight in Xinghai

Day 3Tsigorthang – Dredzong Monastery – Madoi (Maduo)  Elevation: 4300m Distance: 320km, 6 hours

  • Leave Xinghai and drive to Trekar Dredzong monastery, a remote Buddhist monastery set on the side of a rugged mountain at over 3600m
  • If time allows hike around the holy mountain behind the monastery, about 2 – 3 hours hike
  • Then transiting through nomadic grasslands to the small town of Maduo, which lies at 4350m. Take a short walk up to see prayer flags on the hillside
  • Overnight in Maduo

Day 4Maduo – Kyaring and Ngoring Lake / Yellow River Source Area – Madoi Elevation:4300m Distance: 220km, 5 hours

  • Set off for Kyaring/Ngoring Lake, one of the main sources of the Yellow River
  • Cross over some of the marvellous landscapes and wild species such as wild donkeys and Tibetan antelopes
  • Take a short hike on the 4500m high Mt Tsori Katse located between the two stunning lakes
  • Visit Tsori Katse monastery located near the Ngoring lake, a Nyinmapa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and has historical links with the Epic of King Gesar
  • Overnight in Madu

Day 5:Madoi – Mt. Amnye Machen – Machen Elevation: 3700m Distnace: 260km, 5 hours

  • Drive to the north side of Amnye Machen, a holy mountain in the Golog Prefecture of southern Qinghai province, equivalent to Mt Kailash in western Tibet. Tibetan pilgrims travel for weeks to circumambulate the peak, believing it to be home to the protector deity Machen Pomra
  • Afterwards drive to Machen town
  • Reach Machen town and rest

Day 6Machen –Ragya monastery – Trika (Gui’de) Elevation: 2205m Distance: 350km, 6 hours

  • Head out from Machen town early in the morning, all day overland drive, transiting through the rolling grasslands to the mid-sized trading town of Trika also called Gui’de in Chinese
  • On the way, stop by and visit Ragya monastery, the second-largest Buddhist monastery in Qinghai, with over 500 monks
  • Then drive toward Trika, arrive in Trika and visit Minyak stupa and the monastery, the main relic of the stupa said to be the hair of Tibet’s king called Triralpachen
  • Overnight in Trika / Gui’de

Day 7Trika – Jokhang Monastery – Kumbum Monastery – Xining Elevation: 2270m Distance: 320km, 6 hours

  • Leave Trika and head back to Xining, en-route, stop by and visit the Jokhang temple which hosts the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni’s
  • Afterwards, continue to drive toward Kumbum Jampaling Monastery near Lake Kokonor, the monastery was founded by the Third Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso in 1583, it is one of the 6 great monasteries in Tibet and home to over 600 monks
  • Reach Xining city and rest
