Tour Details

This will be a great tour, as you will have opportunities to see some of the stunning landscapes of Tibet. To ensure a gradual adjustment to the altitude, you will start out with tours around Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet. You will tour around some of the historical and religious sites, such as the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple, and Drepung and Sera monasteries.

Then, you will embark on the extended journey which will include overland travel through some of the marvellous landscapes and visits to key stunning sites. For example, the north-facing Mt. Everest (alt. 8848m), the Mt. Shisha Pangma (alt.8012m), the Yamdrok Lake, the Karo La Glacier, and the Pelkhor Chode Monastery in Gyantse, which has one of the best old towns in central Tibet. Next, you will go to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and home to the largest Buddhist monastery of Tashi Lhunpo. After Shigatse, the tour trajectory will take you through some of the high passes, including the Gyatso La, which offers sweeping views of the world’s highest mountain range, and the north-facing Everest Base Camp.

Along with this authentic tour program, you will be able to experience an up-close of the traditional lifestyle of the local Tibetans by visiting a typical farmers’ village, outdoor camping at Tibetan traditional yak tent. Outdoor camping at the lakeshore to enjoy a panoramic view of the blue lake and the majestic surrounding mountain, night sky and stargazing. Furthermore, you will also have plenty of time at your own disposal to see and feel what it is like to be eating in local Tibetan restaurants and have a morning or afternoon tea in local tea shops. Participate and hear an inspirational Micro-talk session by a renowned local Tibetan expert on themes range from tradition and culture, architecture and festivals, costume and Tibetan signs and symbols etc. A visit to Shol Dhenpa Handicraft school is followed by in the afternoon to see and learn the extraordinary array of authentic Tibetan traditional and contemporary works of crafts and arts.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Lhasa   Elevation 3650m

  • AM: Arrive in Lhasa & Acclimatization
  • PM: Self-paced exploration around the Bakhor street

Day 2In and Around Lhasa

  • Explore the “spiritual heart” of Lhasa city, the Jokhang temple, and the surrounding old quarters
  • Visit Sera Monastery, one of the “Great Three “Buddhist monasteries
  • Tibetan traditional styled welcome group dinner

Day 3In and Around Lhasa

  • Visit the Potala Palace, the iconic landmark building, a World Heritage Site
  • Visit Drepung Monastery, one of the “Great Three” Buddhist monasteries in Tibet, afterward, visit Nechung temple just below Drepung – the seat of the State Oracle of Tibet
  • Continue to explore around old quarters of the town
  • Participate and hear an inspirational and enlightening talk or a presentation by a renowned local Tibetan expert on themes range from tradition and culture, architecture and festivals, costume and Tibetan signs and symbols etc.

Day 4In and Around Lhasa

  • Make 3 hours Kora or circumambulations to the entire old Lhasa city, virtually called Lingkhor in Tibetan
  • In the Lingkhor road, visit Ani Tsamkung nunnery in Lhasa, the only one nunnery in the old town and the most active one.

Day 5Lhasa – Drak Yerpa Hermitage

  • Take a morning tea and Tibetan noodle soup in a local popular tea shop
  • Mini hike around Drak Yerpa hermitage, 16 kilometres northeast of Lhasa – a short drive from Lhasa
  • Visit Shol Dhenpa Handicraft school to see and learn the extraordinary array of authentic Tibetan traditional and contemporary works of crafts and arts, like Tibetan pottery wares, Thangka painting, sewing work, paper and Buddhist statue fabrications

Day 6Lhasa -Yamdrok Lake Distance: 180Km Elevation: 4440m

  • Depart Lhasa in the morning and drive toward Yamdrok Lake
  • Cross the summit of Kamba-la pass (4700m)
  • Arrive in Yamdrok Lake and outdoor camping to enjoy a panoramic view of the blue lake and the majestic surrounding mountain, night sky and stargazing
  • Overnight in the tent.

Day 7 Yamdrok Lake – Karo La Glacier – Gyantse Distance: 100kms Elevation: 3980m

  • Set off again for Gyantse district, a small, but prominent town in Tibet
  • On the way, stop by and visit the Karo La Pass – an amazing alpine view of the holy Mt. Nyenchen Kangsar glacier in the backdrop
  • Arrive in Gyantse and visit the Pelkor Chode Monastery, and the Gyantse Kumbum – a 32 meters (105ft) high structure, a nine-tier building with 108 gates
  • Overnight in Gyantse

Day 8Gyantse – Shigatse Distance: 90kms   Elevation: 3840 meters

  • Leave Gyantse, drive a short distance to Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet.
  • En route stop by and visit to a Tibetan village namely Pashual and observe the traditional life of the indigenous Tibetan farmers and taste locally made snacks
  • Visit Shalu monastery (a slight detour south) renowned for mural painting and Buddhist scholastic learning and training
  • Travel on to Shigatse city and rest

Day 9Shigatse –Gyatso La –Shelkar Distance: 240kms Elevation: 4315m

  • Leave Shigatse city, and travel west to Shelkar, the gateway to Mt. Everest
  • Cross over the Gyatso La Pass (a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5220 meters)
  • Travel on from Shelkar, cross over the Pang La Pass – enjoy a stunning view of the Himalaya Range
  • Visit Sakya Monastery, the principal monastery of the Sakyapa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism
  • Arrive Shelkar town and rest.

Day 10Shelkar – Rongbuk Monastery Distance: 120kms Elevation: 5000m

  • Leave Shelkar and drive to Rongbuk monastery
  • Visit Rongbuk Monastery, claimed to be the highest monastery in the world (5000 meters)
  • Overnight at Rongbuk monastery tent guest house

Day 11Rongbuk Monastery – Shigatse Distance: 350kms Elevation: 3840m

  • Head back to Shigatse after taking a sweeping panoramic view of the majestic Mt. Everest from Rongbuk Monastery, claimed to be the highest monastery in the world (5000 meters)
  • Arrive in Shigatse prefecture and rest.

Day 12Shigatse – Lhasa Distance: 280kms Elevation: 3650m

  • Tour around Tashi Lhunpo, to witness the largest gilded statue of Future Buddha in Tibet – indeed a historic and culturally important Buddhist monastery
  • Leave Shigatse for Lhasa, taking the northern tarred surfaced road
  • En route visit Nyimo Tibetan incense products, get in touch with local incense producers, try making your piece of products with instructions from local expertise
  • Arrive Lhasa and Rest.

Day 13Nomad Tent Stay Distance: 150km Elevation: 4450m

  • Leave Lhasa and travel on to Yangbachen, a small Tibetan nomadic settlement north west of Lhasa town
  • Set up camping nearby nomadic traditional yak tent and experience the Tibetan nomad’s life by joining them herding yaks and sheep and making cheese, yoghurt, and butter
  • Overnight in the tent.

Day 14Yangbachen – Lhasa Distance: 150km

  • Moring continue an experiencing of Tibetan nomad’s day to day lives
  • In the afternoon, head back to Lhasa
  • On the way stop by and visit the famous Yangbachen geothermal hot spring
  • Arrive Lhasa and rest

Day 15Depart Tibet

  • Depart Lhasa for your next journey
  • Transfer to Lhasa train station or airport by local tour guide and the driver
